Bulgaria welcomes Macedonia – Kosovo border deal
Bulgaria says that it supports the steps taken by Kosovo and Macedonia in signing a final agreement between Pristina and Skopje on the two countries’ borders, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said in a statement on October 20 2009.
"We appreciate these arrangements as an expression of the policy of good neighbourly relations, following which we have always thought as a key condition for EU and Nato integration of the Western Balkans," the Foreign Ministry said.
Bulgaria said that it welcomed the readiness of Kosovo and Macedonia to resolve such issues bilaterally, adding that this would benefit citizens of both countries.
In 2008, Bulgaria annoyed Serbia by joining in the recognition of Kosovo of independent, and recognises Macedonia by that name. Skopje and Athens are locked in a dispute about the use of the name Macedonia which, so far, has defied United Nations-brokered attempts to resolve the matter.
Sofia may be content with the resolution of the border dispute but, going by local media reports, not everyone in Kosovo and Macedonia is happy.
In Kosovo, people in a municipality near the border said that they would protest, alleging that Macedonia had acquired 22ha of private land through the border demarcation.
Kosovo daily Zeri quoted "security experts" as saying that the matter was a continuing issue, hinting that Serbian secret services had a hand in stoking up emotions.
Kosovo government spokesperson Memli Krasniqi was quoted by Zeri as saying that the land that was there was not lost and people living in the area would have access to their private properties.
Across the border, Branko Crvenkovski, leader of Macedonia’s Social Democratic League, said that the government had allowed an exchange of land by which Macedonia had lost.
The border deal was not a technical one, but an exchange of territory which, in terms of the constitution, required a referendum and a two-thirds majority vote to approve, Crvenkovski said.

Well, Mazestix, you do have quite a good point about the Albanian position on the Macedonian Name Issue. What is the Albanian for "Macedonia" ?
(I know that the Albanian for Albania is "Sqiperia", and I know the Albanian word "grumbullimit", but beyond that my knowledge of the language rather gives out !)
And secondly - as you say - what does the Albanian minority think about the whole "Name" issue, that may not concern them at all ?
I'm just wondering: Do the Albanias in FYROM (35% something?)accept the fact that they have to follow the slavs into the troubles that the name "Macedonia" creates? Obviously, a part of the region Macedonia is within the borders of FYROM. A larger one within the borders of Greece. By claiming that the citizens of the greek part are a "macedonian minority" and that Alexander the Great was a slavian Macedonian, FYROM can only put itself into deep troubles. Yes I'm Greek and I disagree with the whole policy our nations follow (as well as with the insistance in the name). But as a foreigner I think that your country has quite a lot of problems to solve before it opens the pandora box with the constitution name. It's not a greek phaenomenon the rise of right wing parties. It's European. And your unreasonable demands help them grow stronger in countries like Greece and Albania. Aren't these a lot of problems for an 18-years-old country?
Danielle - you're quite right. We should not forget that Karamanlis comes from a Greek power-holding "dynasty" in the Macedonia border region. This means two things:
(a) in general, local dyanasties have strong local family roots in the region (possibly involving property acquired under dubious circumstances) which can override wider national political interests;
(b) specifically, he will be close by reason of family connections to local Greek border interests which have everything to gain by strained Greek/Macedonian relations, and nothing to gain by "detente/glasmost" and closer bileratal relations with the country the [...]

Remember - in Greece (and indeed the Balkans generally) the extended-family comes first and the country second. (I do not exonerate the Macedonians here - they are probably nearly as bad. And certainly the Albanians - with their Kanun of Lek governing every aspect of family relationships - are even worse !)
I wonder,why the greek PM Papandreou has disbanded "Macedonia and Thrace"and will be called as "Northern Greece"Does this means the Greek euphorea has been extinquished?Was this serving Karamanlises political benefit?Is Mr. Papandreou more of a pragmatist.Lets hope,he will do the right thing and recognise the constitutional name of the Republic of Macedonia,and in the meantime the Macedonian minority in Greece.

Pericles - Alexander himself claimed in BC333, in Egypt at the Sacred Temple of Siwah, to be half-descended from the Egyptian God Ammun (or Amon), who impregnated his mother Olympias in the form of a snake. (Rather like the same legend of Lida and the swan in Cyprus.)
Which means, in short, that Alexander was half Egyptian God and half Greek. No mention of Macedonia at all.......
You Greeks should look to your own heritage and be proud and stop trying to steal the Macedonian one . Afterall what's in a name but respect and pride, what you Greeks lack in.

Vergina - if you look at your Roman Empire history, Macedonia is two (Upper and Lower), and is part of Thrace and not part of Greece.
Things change over time....the era of the Hellenic Empire is long gone (not least because the Romans destroyed it !)

Nothing else but another mistake by Macedonia. Defining borders with a breakaway province that is still in dispute, how incredibly low. Wait until the Albanians take part of Macedonia or perhaps Bulgaria. That picture doesn't look so warm and cosy does it! This is the problem with the Balkans... no integrity and no respect. But I can see why the three regions pat each other's back's, being at the bottom of the barrel is lonely.
