Martin Petrov enjoying revival at Manchester City

Manchester City's Martin Petrov, second left, shoots to score past Wigan Athletics goalkeeper Chris Kirkland during their English Premier League match in Wigan on October 18 2009.

Martin Petrov has earned the praise of City manager Mark Hughes after netting a priceless equaliser for Manchester City against Wigan at the weekend.

Petrov, who is experiencing a bit of a revival at the club after being left on the sidelines for much of the early part of the season, is beginning to show just why Hughes was reluctant to offload him to Tottenham and blocked the deal in the final moments before the transfer window closed.

"When opportunities present themselves you have to be able to make an impact. That is what Martin did," said a delighted Mark Hughes about Petrov's strike against Wigan on October 18 2009

Regarding the "controversial celebration" of the Bulgarian, who upon scoring the goal run towards the bench pointing to his shirt, Hughes dismissed it with a smile, saying that this was "normal behaviour" for the Bulgarian and that it did not bother him at all.

"He does it all the time," said the Welshman. "Petrov was a really positive influence on the game, which is what we need. I don't want players who sit in the stand feeling sorry for themselves. They have to be ready to come on and perform."

After the Wigan clash, Petrov's City are in fifth place with 17 points, five behind leaders Manchester United, but with a game in hand over the sides above them.
