The second hearing in the trial of Bulgarian lorry driver Zhivko Roussev, who is facing the death row in Iran for allegedly ferrying 135kg of heroin, was scheduled for October 20 2009, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) said.

The hearing was to be held in Iran's fourth largest city, Tabriz, where Roussev is in custody.

Bulgaria's consul in Iran will be present at the hearing, BNT said. The consul visited Roussev in Tabriz jail 10 days ago, and said that Roussev was in good health, with enough food and other necessities. He had spoken several times with his daughters on the phone, BNT said.

Roussev (55) is expected to plead not guilty, Bulgarian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Blagovest Goranov told BNT. Roussev is being defended by a local lawyer with experience in such cases, BNT said.

In January 2009, Roussev was reported by Bulgarian media to have been in an Iranian jail four months after he had disappeared without a trace.

The Bulgarian driver was caught by police in Tabriz in September 2008. All along his daughter had reckoned that he had gone to Armenia to be with a girlfriend.

His employer, a Bulgarian company, initially did not disclose any information, but after some time they had reported him missing.

It transpired that Roussev had been arrested after police found a hidden compartment in his lorry with 135kg of heroin.

A little suspicious that the Bulgarian company didnt report him missing for "some time". It must have been their truck. More to this than meets the eye!
