Kosovo and Macedonia have reached a border agreement, ending a long dispute over a volatile border region, Voice of America reported.

Kosovo' parliament ratified the agreement on the location of the border late on October 16.  Prime minister Hashim Thaci told a parliament session the agreement will boost regional cooperation and stability.

Macedonia's parliament has yet to ratify the document.  The country's official news agency MIA says foreign minister Antonio Milososki stressed the importance of the border demarcation before the parliament on October 17.

The border agreement will pave the way for establishing diplomatic relations between the two Balkan countries.

Macedonia has recognised Kosovo's 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia, but says it will not establish diplomatic relations before the border issue is resolved.

The disputed area is populated by ethnic Albanians, who make up a quarter of Macedonia's two million people.

A group of ethnic Albanian militants led an anti-government insurgency at the disputed border in 2001.  Police say the area is now used by smugglers.

George, I just retrieved this from Wikipedia. Here's an excerpt. I also provided a link. I don't think most EU members would sign the treaty if they had to relinquish the right to veto. Especially if Greece had to relinquish the right to veto Turkey's or FYROM's accession to the EU. But, I guess time will tell huh?

Excerpt: A proposal to enshrine the Copenhagen Criteria for further enlargement in the treaty was not fully accepted as there were fears it will lead to Court of Justice judges having the last word on who could join [...]

Just a note of caution - this is from this morning's London "Times":

<<President Klaus based his case against the Lisbon treaty on its extension of qualified-majority voting among the EU’s 27 nations into 40 new policy areas, meaning that the Czech Republic and every other country will lose veto rights in these areas. Supporters of the treaty argue that it will help with the smooth running of the EU after its enlargement from 15 to 27 countries since 2004. >>

Note that Greece will lose "veto" rights in no less than [...]

I agree with George there. FYROM is in deep troubles, nevermind the good EC report they obtained. VETO of Greece could have definitely dramatic effects on the political health and balkanic future...

It is good to fix this problem with Kosovo. Macedonia has to be fair to its neighbours if it wants to also be treated fair. Now its time to look at the problem with our own Albanian population who live here so we can all live a good life. By the way when our Bulgarian party wins the next Macedonian elections we are going to kick Gruevski out of Macedonia and back to his Greek roots. Macedonia for the Macedonians.
