Two students in the northeastern riverside city of Rousse found a wallet with documents and 5000 leva in cash and then returned it to the owner, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported on October 15 2009.

Martin Andreev and Victor Tachev found the wallet, the property of a Varna businessman, on their way home. Both students are described as hailing from a humble background. They have an allowance of just five leva daily each.

"We were a bit shocked at first, when we found the wallet. It's only normal, considering the amount of money that was inside."

The students then spent two hours on the phone trying to track down the businessman who eventually arrived from Varna to meet the youngsters personally.

"We thought the man worked very hard for the money, and perhaps that was all he had for next month, so it was vital that we returned it".

Both youngsters are now celebrities at their school, according to the BNT, as fellow students and teachers have been made aware of the incident.

"This is living proof that honourable young men in this country are not a thing of the past," said Dobromira Nikolova, principal of the Foreign Languages secondary school in Rousse attended by the two boys.

"Some of our classmates congratulated us, others say they would have kept the money for themselves. We don't care though, we are happy with what we've done," the boys were quoted as saying.

I shed a sweet tear upon reading this article. It's high time BG showed the world that amongst her population, there also truly honest citizens, and the nation should no longer be taken for granted as a bunch of liars and croocks. God be with these young men for erasing the awlful trend normally expected from BG citizens. Once again, Thankyou. God Bless BG

This is so terrible if they got a reward they would have said. It is such a shame. The poor kids taught he was a genuine business man but then again as most of the real world knows thats not the case in Bulgaria. Bulgaria be ashamed to cheat HONEST CHILDREN like this!!!!

What a great news story. Thank goodness there are still people around with good moral and ethical values. Their parents deserve congratulations too.

Who cares if the "businessman" WAS a mobster? The point is that two young lads showed honesty and integrity - just what Bulgaria needs from its young people and an excellent example to the older generation.

I salute them!

two decent young lads gave back the money to some varna mobster, thinking the poor man was actually depending on them to survive.

there is no justice!

Anonymous Expat Thu, Oct 15 2009 15:18 CET

thanks god, there is hope !

there is really a young and growing community whit sense about right and wrong and moral principles - this gives hope. because what I experienced in this country so far is that thinking "a little bit cheating will not hurt" is very commonly spread ....
UNFORTUNATELY

PEOPLE HAVE TO CARE FOR EACH OTHER AND SET MORAL STANDARDS !
