Putin offers Asia Intervision to rival Eurovision

Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin has suggested to Chinese and other Asian leaders to organise a joint music contest called Intervision to compete with the Eurovision Song Contest, Bulgarian BTA news agency quoted Reuters on October 14 2009.

"The international musical contest Intervision will strengthen cultural ties between our countries," Putin told the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in Beijing.

Such a contest could bring people from China, Uzbekistan Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia under one cultural roof.

Eurovision was launched in 1956 and currently has a TV audience of an average 100 million people although many doubt its aesthetic value. Russia was the 2009 host of the contest after winning it a year earlier.
