Kosovo and Macedonia poised for border deal

A monument to former US president Bill Clinton is installed on Bill Clinton Boulevard in Pristina, Kosovo, October 12 2009. The government of Kosovo said that Clinton's statue will be unveiled in November, with the former president expected to attend the ceremony.

Macedonian prime minister Nikola Gruevski and his Kosovo counterpart Hashim Thaçi are to sign a deal on October 15 2009 finalising the demarcation of the border between the two countries.

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in February 2008, a move rejected as illegal by Belgrade and powerful allies such as Russia. Recognised by some European countries but not others, Kosovo has had unresolved issues regarding its borders – and even diplomatic ties with countries that have recognised it.

Macedonia recognised Kosovo in October 2008 but has not yet established diplomatic relations. On October 13, Kosovo daily Koha Ditore said that establishment of diplomatic relations might await the outcome of an International Court of Justice opinion on the legality of Kosovo’s independence.

Reports said that the Kosovo – Macedonia border question was resolved with the help of US embassy officials. Washington has been a leading backer of Kosovo independence.

Koha Ditore reported on October 10 that there had been a problem on the Kosovo – Montenegro border after Podgorica put a "Welcome to Montenegro" sign in what is supposed to be neutral territory.

Montenegro recognised Kosovo as independence on October 9 2008 but Podgorica and Pristina have yet to establish diplomatic relations.
