Traffic accidents in the last 24 hours have claimed six lives and left more than 35 people injured, in what is the heaviest death toll in weeks, according to a press statement from the Interior Ministry and department of Traffic Police, KAT, released on October 13 2009.

In Sofia alone, 123 accidents occurred, seven of which were heavy, resulting in 14 people admitted to hospital.

Additionally, a seventh person was reported dead in Stara Zagora when he had a heart attack while driving at about 6.40pm on October 12,  Focus news agency reported on October 13. The car then slammed into a brick wall; thankfully, no bystanders were injured in the collision.

Meanwhile the police force in Plovdiv apprehended five drivers aged 24-54 for driving under the "heavy influence" of alcohol. They were detained for 24 hours and will face charges.

KAT warns drivers to pay special attention to deteriorating road conditions across the country in light of deteriorating weather conditions and reduced visibility.

The danger of landslides in Smolyan, Sofia-Samokov, Assenovgrad-Smolyan, Yugovo-Luki, Kricham-Devin and Mezdra-Botevgrad should also be noted.
