A drastic change in weather conditions is expected over Bulgaria in the early hours of October 14, the Bulgarian meteorologic institute said on October 12 2009.

Conditions will remain warm and calm in the late hours of October 12, but after that changes will be progressively more severe. On the morning of October 14, a cold front from the northwest will envelop the country and sustained winds from the North and North-West will increase in intensity. Rain showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the country, particularly in the western part of the country and mountainous regions.

According to the report, wind intensity in the Danube River valley is expected to be intense, bordering on stormy conditions. Temperatures will slump from the current 24-25C to around 18C on Tuesday before noon and further still by the end of the day.

Conditions in the mountains will be "dangerous and extreme". Over 1200 metres of elevation temperatures will be around 4C and above 2000 metres, -4C. Snowfall and fog are expected.

By midday on October 14, temperatures will be between 4C and 11C in most parts of the country. Scattered rain showers, cloud cover and obscured visibility are expected throughout the week. The seaside will also see a drop in temperatures and strong winds are expected.

A similar warning was issued in Romania, where the entire country has been put on alert, with warnings of temperatures dropping and high precipitation. Western Romania will be affected the most, with temperatures falling below 0C on October 14 and snow forecast in northwestern Romania and the Carpathian Mountains.
