More than 2000 customs officials are due to undergo a special assessment test on October 12, designed to evaluate their "conduct, professionalism and proficiencies", an evaluation that will take two days, Dnevnik daily has reported.

Head of the customs agency Vanyo Tanov has announced that the aim of the aptitude examination is to evaluate the service's capabilities and then develop a programme to facilitate their specialisation. The testing procedures are supposed to improve the effectiveness of the service and the administration wing.

"We want to have a better prepared workforce, and to be capable of processing more work with fewer staff who are more professional and better qualified for the job, and they will also be better paid," said Tanov, quoted by Dnevnik daily.

Customs officials from Plovdiv, Varna, Bourgas and Rousse will sit the tests on October 12-13, while Sofia-based officials will be tested on October 14 "in light of their large number".

According to Tanov, the test will constitute a multiple choice form comprising 40 questions.
