David Cerny is not coming to Bulgaria, feels offended

Czech artist David Cerny, who was to take part in an exhibition opening in Plovdiv on October 10 2009, was not coming to Bulgaria because he felt offended by Plovdiv authorities, private national bTV channel said.

This means that Cerny would not accept Prime Minister Boiko Borissov’s invitation to lunch on October 11 2009 in Sofia.

On October 6 2009, Plovidv mayor Slavcho Atanassov banned Cerny from entering the premises of Banyna Starinna city hall gallery where Cerny was supposed to exhibit a black cloth which had been part of his previous art installation called Entropia.

It was this art installation, displayed at the European Commission building in Brussels in January 2009, which led the then Bulgarian government to protest against Cerny and demand an official explanation from the Czech government.

It depicted Bulgaria as a collection of Turkish toilets, which enraged many in Bulgaria while others took it as satirical and ironic, although not very original.

After several days of heated reactions from Bulgaria, the artwork was partially hidden behind a black cloth.

Because of this, Atanassov decided not to allow Cerny exhibit the black cloth in the Banya Starinna gallery, as was the original idea of curator Emil Mirazchiev who invited Cerny.  Atanssov even said that two policemen would wait for Cerny outside the gallery should he attempt to enter.

In an attempt to cool things down, Prime Minister Borissov invited Cerny to lunch on October 11 2009 in Sofia. Now, however, according to bTV, Cerny had decided not to come to Bulgaria at all because of the ban imposed on him by Atanassov.

Cerny is a dishonest untalented and frankly boring attempt at being an artist. Too many good artists never get the exposure nor money this ignorant cheap fake has got. I do not see why anyone should welcome him anywhere. Better you concentrate your time and media coverage on worthwhile talented people...

David Cerny is a hack, and we don't need his ilk in Bulgaria.
P.S. No one outside of eastern Europe has ever heard of this duffus.

To Jon:
The mayor is not a member of Ataka but of Internal Macedonia Revolutionary Organisation (IMRO) which also peruses patriotic agenda although not as extreme as Ataka

Modern 'Art' completely baffles me - as do the artists, who all seem to live on a different planet than this one.

However, to ban an individual for his/her art is such a facist/communist approach.

Personally I think the Mayor has shown a complete lack of leadership, intelligence and integrity. must admit I did not know he was a member of ATAKA - which explains a lot.

Poor David... first he ripped off the EU council by lying about the sculpture, creating fake artist profiles and pocketing all the money: then he depicts Bulgaria as a toilet. Now he wants to present a black rag as a piece of art and he's offended that the Bulgarians don't want him. The idiot should be ignored.
