On Thursday October 15 2009, the garden in front of central Sofia's Ivan Vazov National Theatre saw the start of a 10-day photo exhibition called "Lebanon - Land of Gods".

The exhibition features 60 amateur photographs of places from all over Lebanon by Romanian Smaranda Sandulescu.

Behind the idea of the exhibition is Bulgarian Lina Petkova who, together with Sandulescu, travelled to Lebanon in the summer of 2008 as part of an exchange programme.

"Lebanon is like a hidden pearl on the bottom of the ocean – everybody knows it exists, but few know how beautiful it is," Petkova said.

"To us Lebanon is distant place, part of the news bulletins of bombs and terrorists, demolished buildings and burning vehicles. In reality the country has a different face. It is the Switzerland of the Middle East," she said. "It is holy land."

The exhibition in Bulgaria is organised by Fil Corporation – Bulgaria with the help of Sofia city hall, the Lebanese community in the country and under the patronage of the Lebanese embassy.
