The controversial zoo in Haskovo is linked to other shocking incidents. An older bear died in the zoo at the turn of 2009, with the bear's carcass being left to decompose in its cage for more than a week
Sofia Zoopark will mark Saint Andrew's Day, known in Bulgaria as Andreevden (Андреевден) with a special ceremony dedicated to bears on November 30 2008. Saint Andrew is, in national tradition, something of the patron and leader of bears. Sveti Andrei is said to have been the only apostle without a day dedicated to him, so he took a bear and went before God. God apparently told the saint: "Who ever does not celebrate your day, may your horse ride him." That is why, in some reasons of the country, on November 30, which is also known as Mechkin den (Мечкин ден/Bear Day), Bulgarians boil corn and throw it into the hearth, while saying: "Here is some boiled grain, bear, so don't eat it raw and take away people's food."
Works will be reviewed by a group of judges, and winners will receive certificates and prizes.
Seven arrested, including ‘The Squirrel’ who was found in possession of 10 00 euro, Interior Ministry says. Mobile phones, computer equipment and drug paraphernalia seized.
Maximum temperatures across the country will remain mostly below zero.
The first tremor was at about 12.34am, followed by another three minutes later. Their epicentres were located between the towns of Radnevo and Topolovgrad.
There was no risk of blackouts caused by insufficient power supply, Economy Minister Traicho Traikov told Bulgarian National Radio.
These so called 'zoos'should be closed down as simple as that and the animals be re-homed to specialized sanctuaries and/or true zoos who look after them in a proper way. As soon as possible before it's to late....
Having been, and in a way still are, specialized in re-homing these kind of animals they can always contact me...
A modern nation does not have a zoo
Hello,
I hope that the zoo is refurbished to a decent standard and maintained properly. I have visited Sofia Zoo and was saddened by it's delapidated state and that was even evident on the appearance of the animals. It is very important to have a zoo with good facilities for both the animals and visitors, to include well equiped restaurants, toilets, and child entertainment areas. Children in a special way, deserve
the cultural pleasure that the zoo offers. Properly run, either by the stare or private, it could become also profitable... 'Food for thought.'
