Sweden, the current holder of the EU presidency, has called for an emergency meeting of other European Union health ministers in Luxembourg on October 12.

The conference will specifically address the growing influenza (H1N1) global crisis, the Swedish presidency of the EU official website reported on October 8 2009. The meeting will be chaired by Swedish health minister Maria Larsson.

Among important topics up for discussion are improving access to information on influenza, offering assistance to developing countries to tackle the crisis and improving preparedness levels across the EU.

The Council is also expected to reassess accessibility to H1N1 vaccines and ensure that all EU member states have sufficient  vaccines to cope with significant outbreaks on their territories and that they are approved quickly and distributed for circulation.
