Bulgaria, as a European Union member state, supported the idea of closer ties and co-operation between Cyprus and Turkey, Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov told Cyprus news agency KNA on October 7 2009, ahead of his October 9 and10 visit to Cyprus.

Bulgaria would support any country wanting to join the EU as long as it met all preliminary accession criteria, he said, as quoted by  Bulgarian news agency BTA.

Such close co-operation would have not just a positive bilateral effect, but a more regional and international impact.

Bulgaria and Cyprus shared similar positions on the Lisbon Treaty, which had to come into effect, Purvanov said.

He said that intensified talks on the Cyprus issue would lead to a permanent solution for the divided island.

Bulgaria supported United Nations Security Council decisions and respected every side's right to bring forward its positions, Purvanov said.

On the subject of Bulgarian-Cyprus energy co-operation, Purvanov said that the possibility of Cyprus taking part in the regional energy market would contribute to the energy independence of South Eastern Europe and the EU as a whole.

During his visit to Cyprus, where he will be accompanied by his wife Zorka Purvanova, Purvanov will meet his counterpart, president Dimitris Christofias, and will hold plenary talks.

The two presidents will sign a joint declaration on bilateral relations, including a programme for co-operation in the fields of science, education and culture for 2009-2011 period.

They will open a Cyprus-Bulgarian business forum. Purvanov will meet Marios Garoyian, president of the house of representatives and Eleni Mavrou, mayor of Nicosia.

On the second day of his visit, Purvanov will meet representatives of the Bulgarian community in Cyprus and will meet the country's religious leaders.

Purvanov and Christofias will attend the football match between Bulgaria and Cyprus in qualifying group 8 for the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa.

I meant to say that "the Greek part of Cyprus is Greece, right?"

Anonymous Valeri Fri, Oct 09 2009 02:11 CET

"European Union shouldn't have accept Cyprus as a member before solving problem on the island."

Cyprus is Greece right? Are they Greek? Do they speak Greek? When you accept a country, all of its parts go in, right? Why can't the EU border just go through the island? It's not like Turks and Greeks there have a common political rule or infrastructure or ethnicity.

Isn't it similar to the European part of Turkey? Why don't we talk about that, since with the same logic the Turkey in Europe should have the right [...]

Can someone explain? Is Cyprus a political or geographical entity?
Lat time I checked geographical belonging is irrelevant. Otherwise there wouldn't be any talk of Turkey in the EU since 90% of it is in Asia.
Why can the Greek part of Cyprus be in the EU and the Turkish in Turkey?

Nondas, you should recognize first that, the EU changed the rules just after starting to negotiate with Turkey. I agree with you about the harmonizing itself for Turkey, but any honest and smart people can not agree with you about refusion of Turkey to recognize Cyprus. Turkey is right to refuse to recognize Cyprus and this is not an issue of become a member of European Union. European Union shouldn't have accept Cyprus as a member before solving problem on the island. Because Turkish side of the island accepted UN decisions on the referendum, but Greek side rejected it!!!

Bulgaria may support any country which wants to join the EU ,but also must respect the EU rules of the protocol. Turkey is having presently EU accession talks ,but refuses to recognize Cyprus which is a EU member state . Turkey wants to impose its will on to little Cyprus and to negate the EU rules which already signed but fails to abide by them. In our opinion Bulgaria and the rest of the EU family of nations must not allow Turkey to become an EU member unless it harmonizes itself and abides by the rules of the protocol.
