Construction progress of Danube Bridge II between Vidin at Calafat has been thwarted, with current delays estimated at no less than seven months, while the cost of construction was expected to escalate by an additional 20 to 30 per cent in conjunction with the delays, Dnevnik daily has reported on October 2 2009.

This was confirmed by deputy project manager Konstantin Zhiponov, who said that the facility was not going to be ready by the end of 2010 as originally scheduled. Instead, a more realistic and achievable target was said to be June 2011.

According to Zhinov, there were several complex and intertwined reasons for the delay, both "on shore" and "under the water" Dnevnik quoted him as saying.

Permission of approval from Romanian authorities for the Spanish company FCC to commence construction procedures on the Romanian shore had been delayed by nearly a year,  moreover, Romanian authorities had failed to deal with the restitution of land and nationalisation of parcels within the designated time frame, which in turn had exacerbated the situation even further.

Zhinov said that Romanian authorities were originally supposed to grant permission for the construction in June 2008, but this did not materialise until May 2009. Accordingly, the Spanish FCC have so far only initiated topography surveys and preparations for construction work.

I have been visiting Bulgaria, now and then, since 1997 and the changes are dramatic and for the better. I find it to be a country of great potential and beauty. You can find negative everywhere, including here in N.America - for example plain, drab cities that all look identical full of stressed people trying to find money for next months mortgage with limited vacations, poor pensions etc. Bulgaria will be a great place to live once they improve the economy.

"Bulgaria is one of the most least important countries in the world."

No, Bulgaria is one of the least most important countries in the world;) It all depends how you look at it;)

Valeri

Bulgaria is one of the most least important countries in the world. Its a little collapsed Balkan country of 7 million.

There a hell of a lot more countries far better then yours will be.

Bulgaria has no money, nothing, the new government is not good according to the Bulgarians here in Canada that tell me.

So no Bulgaria's going downhill.

Bulgaria is not important. Its small and insignificant.

Romania and Serbia have played the same Balkan game - isolate your neighbor and show them how insignificant they are.

Romania understands that it's best chance is to keep Bulgaria as isolated as possible, making trade and travel difficult to the point where business simply falls to Romania by default. One bridge over the Danube leading into the rest of Europe is simply not sufficent for a more modern Bulgaria.

Very typical.
We've been trying to build this bridge for 15 years and the Romanians have always sabotaged it...
