EU report: Georgian attack started war with Russia

A column of Russian armoured vehicles moves along a road in South Ossetia, near the border with North Ossetia August 23 2008.

The EU-sponsored report supports Russia's insistence that Georgia launched the short but intense war with an indiscriminate rocket and artillery barrage on the separatist capital of South Ossetia — an act the commission said was not justifiable under international law.

Georgia can find support for its claim that Russia taunted and provoked it for years before the assault, then responded with disproportionate force, sending armored vehicles deep into undisputed Georgian territory.

Russia's retaliation went "far beyond the reasonable limits of defense," the report said, rejecting claims the country was trying to prevent genocide with its invasion of its southern neighbor, a former Soviet nation with fervent hopes of joining the EU and NATO.

The beginnings of the July 2008 war had been murky, its aftermath contentious.

russia started the war by moving it's troops into south osseatia i.e. started the invasion of internationally recognized Georgian territory. Georgia therefore fired at the invaders i.e. fired 1st. the reports says that Georgia fired 1st but it also states that Russia is at fault and should not have invaded Georgian land. If you read beyond 1st page you will see but knowing that Russian's don't like to read all that much and that they are very short fused they must really think they Georgia is to blame. Read some more my vodka loving friends and you will know the [...]

Read the full comment truth. About Saakashvili. Even dead with tie in his stomach he is better then your KGB thug, murderer, liar, criminal Putin or his sidekick Medvedev. Says a lot about your "Empire". I would rather eat my tie publicly then be drunk like Boris Yeltsin was or aggressive like your very short and poor Putin is.

It's really absurd that some Georgian's still believe that Russia started the war even after the EU report stated very clearly the cause of the conflict.Georgian citizen's needs to standup on hold their President responsible for bringing all the carnage to your country.I do think your President was misled by foreign power to start the war either thinking Russia will not strike back or if they did he will get some help but all that failled. My opinion is that this war should not have happen at the first place simply because Ossetian and Georgian people were living in peace in [...]

Read the full comment South Ossetia.Secondly Russia and Georgia are culturally interrelated through marriage and other traditions,to make matter's even worse we have some Russian soldiers with Georgian heritage.Let's all hope that insteady of war we will all be sitting across the table from each other discussing on how to overcome social, economic and enviromental challenges we face in the 21st century.

Russians shouldn't have been in South Ossetia anyway. UN was trying to monitor these areas but Russia of course objected to it and stationed its troops in on Georgian soil. This was done simply to annex out land. Then they provoked Georgian's by shelling villages populated by Georgians. Then they brought in thousands of more troops to conduct genocide and ethnics cleansing of Georgian citizens on our own soil. What Georgia did was totally justifiable they tried to defend themselves and their citizens from full scale Russian planned invasion. The report is biased and is to some degree in Russia's [...]

Read the full comment favor simply because it was orchestrated and ordered by those EU Countries who denied "M.A.P." to Georgia right before the war and who's economy is heavily hooked to Russian Gazprom. The responsibility for this will lie on those countries first and foremost. Russia did what Russia does disregarded international law and annexed smaller neighboring country. Those man who died, died for a very noble cause. They where following the order from their commander and chief who was elected by majority of Georgian's and if not such aggressive Russian sponsored anti Saakashvili propaganda he would have had lot more support and unity from his own people which is so important for our Country.

What is there left to argue about? I am Georgian and would like to announce (if you haven't realized this by now) that our president is suffering from a severe case of delusion. We are not enemies of Russia nor do we want our families to be pushed into this inferno by a schizophrenic leader. Our people, especially those who's brothers and sons were thrown into the Russian grinder do not wish him well. If you watch some of the videos of exchange fire between Georgian/Russian troops you will notice that some Georgian troops did not even fire back but [...]

Read the full comment simply hid behind various objects and lay there knowing that this is not a war they want to be apart of that this is wasn't a good decision some even tried to flee.

I wonder how much they payed for that report - I would've told then all that for a fraction of the price;)

Putin tricked the dumb Georgian, high on the imagined US support, into invading the areas, and bitch slapped him properly.

He wasn't the main aim though.
What Russia did, is pay back for Kosovo.
The whole scenario is 100% mirror image-of that war, and similarly the Americans were forced to watch helplessly their "ally" be humiliated in front of their eyes, the same way Russia couldn't [...]
