Under a new proposal by Labour Minister Totyu Mladenov, Bulgaria's unemployed who are actively looking for jobs and take part in qualification programmes would get unemployment benefits for three months longer than initially planned.

Currently the unemployment benefit is limited to between four and 12 months, depending on the number of years of active employment.

The new short-term measure would apply to around 25 000 unemployed, Mladenov said.

The move targets a larger coverage of training initiatives, which have so far drawn 8 000 jobless.

The minister said the budget of the Unemployment Fund with the National Social Security Institute, which doles out unemployment aid, would go from from 101 million leva in 2009 to 200 million leva in 2010.

The 2009 budget could cover payments to 56 000 people, while the number of unemployed is twice as high, requiring higher expenses.
