Pope pays visit to Prague

A massive four-day police security operation will begin Sept. 25 for the visit of Pope Benedict XVI. The visit comes against the backdrop of a domestic political crisis and a treaty, still to be ratified, between the Czech Republic and the Vatican. One leading church spokesperson claimed controversially that the church was "the largest alternative to politics causing the crisis we are witnessing."

The treaty has been the single most contentious issue between the Vatican and the Czech Republic and, while not officially on the agenda, it is highly likely to be discussed.

I like the bit about the Czech spokesman saying "much more complex issues than with Pope John Paul II". This is code for: "His Holiness is a bloody German, whereas JP II was a neighbouring Pole". Pity they didn't sort out the confiscated church property bit with JP II while he was alive....
