Police have arrested Rossen Efremov, the man alleged to responsible for attacking a senior police officer in Pernik on September 20 2009, Bulgarian Focus news agency said.

Efremov was sought by police after police officer Dimitar Dimitrov was reportedly attacked in broad daylight at a coffee shop in Pernik just outside Sofia.

Dimitrov, who had worked on a drug-dealing case against Efremov, which was still pending in court, suffered head injuries in the assault. Although Dimitrov is said to be recovering well, Prime Minister Boiko Borissov has demanded stiffer punishment for those convicted of attacking police officers.

The reported attack was also condemned by police officers' trade union who demanded better protection from the state at a September 27 2009 gathering in which more then 300 off-duty police officers gathered in Sofia's Sveta Nedelya's square.

They protested against light sentences for those who attack police officers. Police officers have also demanded heavier sanctions against fellow officers who abuse their power.

Borissov said that legislative changes will be tabled in Parliament within 30 days.
