Austrian retain chain Billa is poised to build 17 new stores in Bulgaria by the end of 2009, expanding at a rate of one store a week, which will take the total number of new stores opened this year to 25.

There are now 48 Billa stores operating in the country and the total number will reach 65 by December 2009, according to Emil Stefanov, CEO of Billa Bulgaria.

Two new stores are close to being completed in Rousse and Stara Zagora, expected to start operations in early October, which will take Billa's retail chain to 50 outlets on the eve of the company's third anniversary in the country.

Furthermore, three new stores will open doors in Sofia, the largest one on the corner of Madrid Boulevard and Cherkovna Street, while new stores will commence operation in Plovdiv, Varna and Bourgas, all by December as well.

"We are concentrating on smaller to medium-sized stores in the centre of Sofia," Stefanov said, quoted by Stroitestvo Gradut on September 28. "This doesn't mean that we will not expand in the boroughs, we are looking for opportunities to expand everywhere."

Currently, the smallest Billa stores operation in 430 sq m, with the largest ones 2 400 sq m, while the average ones are at about 1 200 sq m.

Good for the consumer in the fact they offer more range all under one roof. Bad for the consumer as thousands of small town shops will close. Ghost towns they call them in the UK.
