The European Commission has approved 185 million euro in co-financing through the EU’s transport operational programme to be used to extend Sofia’s metro underground railway network, Prime Minister Boiko Borissov told a news conference on September 27 2009.

The total cost of the project, linking Nadezhda quarter and Cherni Vrah Boulevard, is just more than 247 million euro, towards which Bulgaria will pay 27 million euro in co-financing, while Sofia municipality has found 61.9 million euro from other sources.

Borissov said that, thanks to the efforts of Sofia municipality, the EC money would be the largest sum allocated to Bulgaria to date for an infrastructure project.

The project would create 3000 jobs, local materials would be used, and sub-contractors from all over the country would be used, he said.

The new extension, scheduled for completion in mid-2012, will give residents of Nadezhda, Moderno Predgradie and Tolstoi a seven-minute ride to the Sofia city centre, Borissov said.

Similar efforts were being put into other infrastructure projects such as Bulgaria’s highways, in line with the core of his Government’s anti-crisis programme, which was the use of fresh capital for salaries and public investments.

Borissov said that he hoped that other infrastructure projects would be fast-tracked once Brussels restores its faith in Bulgaria.
