More than 300 railway workers protested against salary delays on September 27 2009 in the central town of Gorna Oryahovitsa, Bulgarian-language Dnevnik daily said.

The slogan of the protest was "No to hunger, no to misery. We want our salaries paid on time".

The protest was held after employees of state monopoly Bulgarian Railways Company (BDZ) started getting their pay late because of shrinking business opportunities.

"There is a genocide being conducted against BDZ and its employees. We lack motivation to work, we carry on with our duties under stress and psychological harassment as a result of salary delays," trade union leader Petar Bounev said.

"We get between 200 and 300 leva a month and there are plans put forward for the dismissal of 4000 railway workers. We want to remind you that there about 30 000 people who are affected by the problem," Bounev said.

A meeting between trade unions and Transport Minister Alexander Tsvetkov is scheduled for October 1 2009. If the meeting fails to produce results, a further protest will be held in the city of Plovdiv, followed by one in Sofia.

A big blow to BDZ's earnings was the closure of the steel giant Kremikovtzi plant in Sofia.

Perhaps we should tie the salary payment schedules of MPs to the rest of state employed personnel. I guarantee 'everyone' will then get paid correctly and on time. And this is the government making statements about Good Corporate Governance. Rail will always make a loss. No national rail group in the world makes a true profit. They are provided as a service to national infrastructure and commerce; just like the roads.
