Eskil Erlandsson, agriculture minister of Sweden - current holder of the European Union presidency - is to invite his colleagues to attend an informal lunch in Brussels on October 5 to discuss the situation on the milk market.

The issue was discussed at the earlier Agriculture and Fisheries Council on September 7, and it will also be on the agenda for the Council meeting on October 19 and 20 when the European Commission plans to present a new market analysis and possible proposals.

The price of milk on the world market has dropped significantly since the peak in mid-2008. The price that dairy farmers receive has thus taken a drastic drop, which means that many of these farmers are in a difficult economic situation.

"We are taking this situation seriously and I have therefore taken the initiative to meet my colleagues to discuss the problem," Erlandsson said.
