Eleven Bulgarian cities are offering events on the theme "Star Night" to mark September 25, European Researchers’ Night.

All over Europe, 200 cities will be celebrating science in different ways.

The European Commission launched European Researchers’ Night in 2005, and 2009 is the fourth year that Bulgaria is taking part.

In Bulgaria, organisers said that the events are targeted at all age groups.

The programme activities include "astro party with researchers", demonstrations, star observations, exhibitions of poetry, painting, photographs or models on topics within astronomy, and short films entitled Researchers’ Night and Astronomy Observations in Bulgaria.

Other activities, according to the programme, are a "scientific café", demonstrations in street laboratories, LAN parties, essay and photo competitions and games.

The Star Night programme’s main goal is to enhance public awareness of researchers’ role in society and to encourage young people in Bulgaria to embark on scientific careers, organisers said.

"The project also intends stimulating the involvement of young people notably through taking advantage of the experience of the astronomic observatories in various smaller towns in the country, the celebration of 30 years since the first Bulgarian spaceship launch and emphasising the importance of Bulgarian contributions in international science."

TIME FOR TRAVEL: A lovely day in the neighbourhood

The Black Sea capital of Bulgaria; the third-largest and fastest-growing city in the country; the pearl of the Bulgarian Black Sea coast; home of the oldest gold in Europe. These are the usual definitions you will read in most of the travel guides and websites about the city of Varna. This article will not try to prove or disprove these claims that the city had managed, over the past few years, to turn into its advertising hallmark.
