An experimental HIV vaccine, tested during medical trials in Thailand, has reportedly shown a significant  breakthrough in the fight against Aids after scientists said that data from experiments conducted can reduce the risk of HIV infection by a third, the BBC has reported.

With more than 16 000  volunteers participating in the trials, it was hailed as the largest ever experiment conducted. The experiment itself was sponsored by the US army, with the co-operation of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the report says.

"It has been hailed as a significant, scientific breakthrough, but a global vaccine is still some way off," CNN reports.

According to the report, the "miracle" jab is a blend of  two vaccines, and it was then administered on HIV-negative Thai men and women aged 18 to 30 at average risk of infection, with half of the participants given dummy (blank) shots.

Subsequently, new infections were detected in 51 of the 8197 people given the vaccine, and in 74 of  8198 of those who were administered the blank shots, which accounts to 31 per cent decrease in potential infection of the specific group.

"These results show that development of a safe and effective preventive HIV vaccine is possible," said Col. Nelson Michael, director of the U.S. military HIV research programme, as quoted by CNN.

The jabs are manufactured by Global Solutions for Infectious Diseases and Sanofi Pasteur.

so much as the vaccine is a blend of two how far does the vaccine extend to all the various antigenic and genetical manifestation of the HIV ability to change forms. However it is a good clue that is a needle hole from which many shots could be made.
more courage and i hope the efficacy goes up.
