Eight football clubs from Bulgaria's top devision owed close to four million leva in overdue taxes, the head of National Revenue Agency (NRA), Krassimir Stefanov, told private broadcaster bTV on September 23 2009.

The NRA audited a number of football clubs in Bulgaria, using Bulgarian Football Union records. These records showed that a number of players had annexes added to their contracts, stipulating salary increases of 10 000 to 15 000 leva a month, while clubs' records said that they received 220 leva a month.

"I just want to known how these players can afford brand-new luxury cars with their 220 leva monthly salaries," Stefanov said. With the exception of some of the top teams, all had their football players paid the mandatory minimum salary of 220 leva a month, he said.

Of the eight clubs, whose names Stefanov did not disclose, one club alone owed about two million leva in unpaid taxes, while the rest of the debt was shared among seven others.

In total, clubs owed 7.8 million leva of unpaid taxes, other fees and interest rates to the state Budget. All results of the NRA checks would be send to the Prosecutor-General's Office for further investigations, Stefanov said.

10,000 leva a month for kicking a ball. Lets be honest, you can see better football in inter-school leagues.
Perhaps it is compensation for having to hug and kiss their team mates at every opportunity. That plus hairbands, hairnets, weekly manicures, and a strong desire for fashion items.....it makes one wonder...
