Levski Sofia lose their skipper

Levski Sofia skipper Georgi Petkov is likely to miss the crucial UEFA Europa League encounter with Italian side Lazio on October 1 2009. The goalkeeper was injured during the Sofia derby with arch rivals CSKA Sofia which the Reds won 2-0 on September 20.

The player sustained a shoulder injury which will definitely keep him sidelined from Levski’s next league encounter against Chernomorets this weekend.

Subsequently, Levski Sofia are facing two crucial encounters, one for the domestic league and one in Europe in which they have to cope with their third goalie, as second choice Bozhidar Mitrev is nursing a broken right arm and is also definitely out of the squad.

Accordingly, third choice Tsvetan Dimitrov who only bagged a handful of league matches in last year’s campaign will be burdened with the enormous task of keeping his goal dry in a season which has started unfavourably for the reigning champions. Moreover, Dimitrov has never played European football, and should he face Lazio that will be his debut, and a very harsh European baptism of fire.

Levski will face Chernomorets on the back of three consecutive defeats sustained from Lokomotiv Sofia, Villarreal and CSKA Sofia. The Blues are currently in the lowly eight position in the league table with nine points from six outings, seven behind leaders CKSA with 16.
