Car Free Day parade in Sofia

September 22 marks European car-free day and to commemorate the event, the Bulgarian Veoevolucia organization (Bicycle-evolution) will conduct the second census of bikes in the capital. The first such census was held on on May 16 2009.

The bicycle parade will begin at the Aryana Lake in the Borisova Gradina park in central Sofia by Vassil Levski national stadium at 4.30pm. From there, it will proceed through Orlov Most (Eagles' Bridge), Evlogi Georgiev boulevard, the National Palace of Culture, Boulevard Bulgaria, Boulevard Vitosha, Petko Todorov St and into South Park through the Petrko Todorov boulevard entrance.

According to event organisers, the march should reach South Park by 7pm where an entertainment programme and a DJ will be awaiting everyone at the summer stage for a "big party and awards", Dnevnik daily has reported. Attendance is free and everyone is invited.

European car-free day is a culmination of European mobility week. The concept of the event varies by location, but it essentially strives to give motorists and commuters awareness of being less reliant on motor vehicles.

While projects along these lines had previously taken place on an ad hoc basis, starting with the 1973/74 "oil crisis", it was only in October 1994 that a structured call for such projects was issued in a keynote speech by Eric Britton at the International Ciudades Accesibles (Accessible Cities) Conference held in Toledo (Spain).

Within two years the first such events were organised in Reykjavík, Iceland, Bath, England and La Rochelle, France, and the informal World Car Free Days Consortium was organised in 1995 to support Car-Free Days world wide.

The first national campaign was inaugurated in the UK by the Environmental Transport Association in 1997, the French followed suit in 1998 with the motto:  "In town, without my car!" and it was established as a European-wide initiative by the European Commission in 2000.
