Romania suspects foul play in train derailing

Fifteen people were injured when a train derailed in southern Romania in the early hours of September 21, Romanian media reported. The accident appears to have been caused by a loosening of the bolts that hold the rail track in place, transport minister Radu Berceanu told reporters.

The express train, travelling from Timisoara in western Romania to capital Bucharest, derailed at about 2.30am near Craiova. All but one injured passengers had been released from hospital within hours, broadcaster Realitatea TV said.

Berceanu said that the unknown perpetrator or perpetrators knew very well what they were doing, loosening the bolts using some oily substance. He dismissed the possibility that it was an attempt to steal the tracks, saying that in that case, the perpetrators would have just taken an older rail track lying by the side of the railroad.

Investigators suspected a former employee of the state railroad CFR, who lives nearby and was demoted several months earlier, Realitatea TV said.

Railroad traffic between Craiova and Caracal was re-routed while repairs went on. According to initial estimates, repair costs could exceed five million euro, Berceanu said.

Sorry, Adeline, passengers DID get hurt (which is why they were admitted to hospital - read the account !) Luckily nobody got killed, which may be what you meant.
