CKSA beat a depleted Levski Sofia side 2-0 in Bulgaria's "Eternal Derby" at Vassil Levski Stadium on September 20 2009 in an unusually entertaining football match - by Bulgarian standards. Two goals from Ivan Stoyanov in the first half and Kostadin Stoyanov in the second assured victory for the Armymen, with which they also maintain their lead at the top of the league table.

The match started in high tempo with flying tackles and visible passion from both camps, the most amazing part of which is that they maintained the same frantic tempo for the full 90 minutes, a phenomenon almost extinct in Bulgarian football grounds.

Initially, both teams seemed equally matched but a dreadful Levski Sofia defensive error allowed for Ivan Stoyanov to find himself facing the Blues goalkeeper in the 16th minute. He looped the ball over Georgi Petkov, making no mistake, propelling CSKA 1-0 ahead.

Levski Sofia were struggling in the middle of the park and could not find a coherent strategy to cope with CSKA's game. The Blues found it impossible to manufacture that final shot on goal once they reached the penalty area, and until the end of the first 45 minutes, they only managed to register one shot off-target, which presented no particular threat to Ivan Karadjov.

With the second half underway, Levski continued to struggle but, amazingly, the tempo of the game seemed to increase. It was a rare match in Bulgarian football where the ball was constantly swinging from one penalty area to another, a true delight to watch, for once.

The Reds squandered two more opportunities with both Yordan Todorov and Ivan Stoyanov failing to penalise the Levski defenders after some frenzied moments in the penalty area.

Michel Platini attempted an acrobatic scissors kick in the 55th minute which was more menacing to a passing flock of sparrows than anything else, but CSKA continued to dominate proceedings.

Levski kept going forward but the final punch was missing. On a rare occasion where the Blues attempted to threaten the Reds goal, Joaozinho unleashed a shot on target, possibly Levski's finest in the evening, saved by Karadjov. Gradually, the champions out-wrestled the ball from CSKA in the centre and started advancing forward, in a spell of domination which lasted for about a quarter of an hour.

Kostadin Sotyanov then scored CSKA's second on the night from a corner kick in the 65th minute, which was nearly followed by a third from Spas Delev. Georgi Petkov then limped out in the 67th minute, as Levski's substitute keeper Tsvetan Dimitrov came out until the end. 

The champions will be pleased to see the back of a dreadful week in which they registered three consecutive defeats, from Lokomotiv Sofia 1-2, and losing away to Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League.

CKSA are at the top of the league with 16 points from six encounters, followed by Chernomorets also in second with the same amount of points but inferior goal difference and Lokomotiv Sofia in third with 13. Levski are in eighth with nine points.
