The European Commission is taking Bulgaria to court for delays in providing Sofia with adequate waste disposal facilities.
Bulgaria faces payments of between 30 000 and 50 000 euro a day if the European Court of Justice finds it guilty of failing to get rid of its baled waste, Deputy Environment Minister Evdokia Maneva said on September 3 2009.
The municipality of Plovdiv has agreed to take a further 100 000 tons of baled refuse from Sofia, Plovdiv mayor Slavcho Atanassov said on August 24 2009.
Half of Sofia's baled refuse will be moved out of temporary storage areas in Kremikovtzi and Gara Iskur districts, Environment Minister Djevdet Chakurov said on October 9 2008 at the opening of a refuse sorting installation in the village of Trebich near Sofia.
Mayors of Sofia and Silistra, Boiko Borissov and Ivo Andonov, singed a contract for the storage of 180 000 tons of baled refuse from Sofia at the Silistra refuse dump, Dnevnik daily reported. According to the agreement, Sofia city hall would pay nearly 24 leva a ton for the storage of baled refuse at the Silistra refuse dump. All 180 000 tons of refuse would be transported to Silistra within half a year, with a maximum of 1000 tones to be transported a day.
