My Bulgaria: Educational

I have always respected politicians who have a gift for making original speeches that depart from the protocol of these kinds of addresses. Hence it was interesting to hear the thoughts of Bulgarian politicians on September 15, the first day of the school year.

Traditionally, Government politicians and the President attend ceremonies throughout the country to mark this happy occasion, although no doubt some pupils may disagree. I never had the pleasure of receiving a politician at my school, however, so I always wondered what it would be like. The fuss, the bodyguards and yes, the inevitable speech.
So here is a small selection of quotes that Bulgaria’s statesmen addressed to school children, their parents and teachers on September 15.

President Georgi Purvanov said: "In a time of crisis, such as this one, the best investment we can make is in education. It is the sector that can take the economy out of recession."

Prime Minister Boiko Borissov said: "Teachers are getting on with their job, parents are taking good care of their children and that’s why I hope all first-graders stay healthy and show great care when crossing the streets. We must all ensure our children’s safety. I was top of the class when I was at high school. As a child of a teacher, I read many books from the age of five onwards," he said.

Education, Youth and Science Minister Yordanka Fandukova, said: "It is big day for Bulgaria. Today, all Bulgaria goes back to school because we are all learning, you at school and we from life."

Finance Minister Simeon Dyankov said: "I hope that in five years’ time, high school graduates will remain in Bulgaria to continue their university education and that they will be able to live in a country with the same living standards as other large European nations."

Traicho Traikov, Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism, said: "Education is a capital because it allows us to take our own decisions. You have to find what inspires you and you should follow it. Don’t let yourself be punished for something you are no good at. Treat others with respect and love, so that Bulgaria can be a land of tolerant and happy people."

Defence Minister Nikolai Mladenov said: "The first school day is important because we are learning all our lives and this is how things should be – irrespective of one’s age or job."

Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov said that sport is an intrinsic part of education because it builds character. "Parents should not forget how to control their children because drugs are today’s biggest problem."

My Bulgaria: Is it worth it?

A widespread view in Bulgaria, keenly supported by politicians, is that the work of the secret services should be hidden from the public eye so that the services can do their job to their utmost. This notion applies equally to secret services’ success and failures.

My Bulgaria: Too late on Bokova

uite predictably, the election of Bulgaria’s ambassador to France, Irina Bokova, as Director-General designate of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) caused mixed feelings in Bulgaria.

My Bulgaria: The untouchables

The latest news of unreasonable (to sat the least) spending of taxpayers’ money by ex-cabinet ministers made me reflect on the possible mindset of former Bulgarian rulers and why they felt like untouchables.

My Bulgaria: Prime Minister offers a hand

In his first in-depth interview after his crushing election defeat, former prime minister Sergei Stanishev said that he respected new Prime Minister Boiko Borissov’s knack for seizing the moment and his skill at self-promotion. Indeed, Borissov is unparalleled in Bulgaria for his ability to get the best out of every situation.

My Bulgaria: Transparent government

The new Government seems to be serious in its promise to bring transparency into the work of public institutions.

We have finally learned about the activities of Ahmed Dogan, the almighty and long-standing leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) party, during all the years he failed to appear in Parliament.
