Six men and four women aged between 18 and 30 will live in a brand-new shelter for people with mental disabilities that opened in the central Bulgarian town of Pleven on September 16 2009, Bulgarian news agency BTA said.

All of them have grown up in social homes without their parents and at present lack adequate literacy and professional skills. Seven social and medical workers are expected to change that, and to teach the individuals skills such as professional cooking.

The shelter is the first of its kind in Pleven and was built as a result of co-operation between the National Centre for Social Rehabilitation and Pleven's city hall. The 100 000 euro funding for the shelter in Pleven's Stara Gara borough is provided through the European Union's Phare pre-accession programme.

Pleven is among the 12 Bulgarian towns involved in a new social programme aimed at helping children left without parental care.
