In 2035, Bulgaria’s population will be a million less than it is now, according to Deputy Labour Minister Hristina Mitreva, quoting figures from the National Statistical Institute.

Mitreva, who was an actuary at the NSI before being appointed a deputy minister in August 2009, said that the number of people not classified as "able-bodied" would increase from a current 17 per cent of the population to 25 per cent.

Bulgarian National Radio reported Mitreva as saying that by 2035, the labour market picture would be that 100 able-bodied Bulgarians would have to support 40 unemployable compatriots.

Bulgaria’s population growth rate has been decreasing since 1950, and currently is negative, the death rate having begun to exceed the birth rate at a point between 1985 and 1990. Population reduction has been compounded by emigration.

However, recent media reports have named Bulgaria as among countries that have seen an increase in the birth rate in the past year or two, a trend beginning after 2007.

Other EU countries that have reported recent significant increases in their birth rates include France, Italy, Belgium and the United Kingdom. In the UK, according to official figures, the highest proportion of babies born are to women not born in the UK but originating from the Indian sub-continent, Africa and Eastern Europe.
