The civil protection authority declared a state of emergency in more than a dozen municipalities on Evia after torrential rain early on September 12 led to flooding in various parts of the island. The municipalities of Dirfis and Lilandion appear to have been the worst affected.

Flash flooding led to one person drowning, hundreds being trapped and widespread infrastructure destruction as well as heavy damages inflicted on homes and businesses.

The government dispatched a team of navy divers, firefighters, and emergency workers to the worst affected areas of Evia in an attempt to help beleaguered residents.

The Greek Kathimerini reported that a Swedish national was pulled to safety by a helicopter after finding himself trapped in a caravan in Oxylithos, municipality of Kymi. As of September 14, some 350 residents were still stranded in the village of Mistros as the bridges in the area had collapsed.

A 39-year-old policeman serving in Aliveri drowned after his vehicle was swept away by onrushing floodwater as he attempted to cross a bridge in Stomio on his way to begin his shift. Firefighters were able to recover the body of officer Nikolaos Triantafyllou, a father of two.

Meanwhile the situation in Turkey continues to remain dire as regions facing the Black Sea face the prospect of even worse weather in coming days. Meteorologists have declared that the provinces of Trabzon and Rize face a high risk of flooding on September 14, and for the remainder of the week as the weather system shows no sign of dispersing, the Turkish Hurriyet has reported.

The eastern provinces of Erzurum, Kars and Agrı, the southern provinces of Adana and Mersin, and the central provinces of Nigde and Kayseri, are also expected to be severely battered by the weather as on September 15.  Residents of Canakkale in Marmara province have also been informed of the likelihood of strong winds, intense precipitation and possible flooding to come, NTV news has said.

Thunderstorms are also expected in the Black Sea provinces of Sinop, Samsun, Ordu and Giresun for the entire week.
