Mayor in Bulgaria arrested for evading taxes in Germany

The mayor of a village in Bulgaria who quit Germany leaving more than a million euro in tax and insurance unpaid has been detained on the basis of an international arrest warrant.
 
This was announced on September 11 2009 by Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov.
 
Bulgarian news agency Focus said that Bahri Berker, mayor of the village of Krushovene in the municipality of Dolna Mitropoliya had a construction company in Germany in 2003 and 2004 and had failed to pay taxes and insurance.
 
The international arrest warrant was issued at the request of authorities in Frankfurt.
 
Tsvetanov declined to comment further on the details of the case but said that strong action was needed against those who failed to pay tax.
