Another earthquake strikes Turkish town

A second earthquake, measured at 4.7 on the Richter scale, has hit the province of Konya on September 11 2009, the Anatolia news agency reported.

Officials report that the tremor was felt at 4:58 am Turkish time.  The epicentre was triangulated close to the town of Selçuklu. About seven hours earlier, according to Turkish media, the same region was struck by a tremor measuring 4.5 on the Richter scale.

According to media reports, the tremors caused minor structural damages and some buildings suffered cracks in the walls, roofs and fallen chimneys.

No fatalities have been reported, but only minor injuries, mainly self inflicted, by people who attempted to jump off balconies and windows when trying to escape the earthquake.

Residents of the province's main city spent the night outdoors under blankets or in cars, while some other residents went to hospitals complaining of shock.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey as the region is crossed by several major fault lines.
