Graham Sankey: 'I don't care'

Michael Shields, pictured above, served four years in jail before he was pardoned by UK justice secretary Jack Straw

The UK's Daily Mail is reporting that the British football fan suspected of attacking Bulgarian barman Martin Georgiev refused to open the door to reporters at his home on September 10.

Graham Sankey, who was jailed last year for racially abusing a black bouncer, has been named in the press as the man suspected of slamming a concrete block on Georgiev's head in 2005.

On September 9, justice secretary Jack Straw officially pardoned Michael Shields, the Liverpool football fan originally convicted of the attack by Bulgarian authorities.

In his statement, Straw said he was persuaded to pardon Shields because he had heard of "an oral confession" from another person.

The person in question is assumed to be 24-year-old Liverpool electrician Graham Sankey who had earlier admitted to attacking Georgiev but later retracted his confession.

The Daily Mail says that Sankey refused to open the door of his home in the Norris Green area of Liverpool. Sankey apparently said: "I'm not interested  -  I don't care what people think about me."
