Macedonian technology broadcaster it.com.mk said it had received a list of more than 18 000 usernames and passwords for Facebook accounts, allegedly obtained in a new phishing scam.

A large part of the compromised accounts were Macedonian, it.com.mk said.

The phishing attempt would start with a convincingly realistic message in the victim's news feed, saying that a friend had posted something on his or her wall or had commented on a photo. To read the message, the victim would have to click on a link. The link would lead to a page that looked exactly like the Facebook login page, with the only difference being that this page was not served from facebook.com.

By logging in on this page, victims would hand their username and password to the hackers.

According to it.com.mk, the scam was still underway on September 8 when it received the lists, and the number of compromised accounts was still growing. The broadcaster said it could not publish the list, but had made a tool available that would let readers check if their login had been compromised.

Hijacking user accounts on social networks have increasingly become part of a new variant of the Nigerian or 419 scam.

In January 2009, Techcruch.com posted a story of how hijacked accounts were used to ask friends of the victim for money.

@A: the article does not say that nigarians are running scams or that they are the only ones. "Nigerian scam" or "419 scam" is the name of a specific type of scam that actually pre-dates the net.
