Bulgaria will have its last four-day weekend for the year on September 19-22 2009. Tuesday, September 22, is a public holiday, marking the 101st anniversary of Bulgaria independence from the Ottoman empire.

In December 2008, the former government of prime minister Sergei Stanishev declared Monday, September 21, a non-working day and declared Saturday, September 26, a working day as a compensation.

The longest official holiday period was in May, when the government declared a six-day holiday as Friday May 1, Labour Day, and May 6, Gergyovden (Saint George’s Day), are public holidays.

Public holidays in Bulgaria in 2009 are January 1 (New Year's Day), March 3 (Liberation Day), April 18-19 (Eastern Orthodox Easter), May 1 (Labour Day), May 6 (St George's Day and Army Day), May 24 (Day of Bulgarian Culture and the Slavonic Alphabet), September 6 (Unification Day), September 22 (Independence Day), and December 24-26 (Christmas).
