The new German ambassador to Bulgaria Matthias Höpfner has arrived in Sofia and will take office after presenting his credentials to President Georgi Purvanov, the German embassy said on September 9 2009.

Höpfner, 56, is a law graduate and has spent several years working as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg.

He started his diplomatic career in 1987. During his first year's service he worked at West Germany's foreign ministry in Bonn. Höpfner's first posting abroad was in Jakarta in 1989-1992, responsible for consular, legal and media matters, after which he returned to Bonn.

From 1995 until 1997 Höpfner served as deputy ambassador in Tripoli, followed by a number of positions in the foreign ministry in Berlin. In 2006-2009 he was Germany's ambassador in Ottawa Canada.

Höpfner replaces Michael Geier whose term ended on June 30 2009.
