President Georgi Purvanov has called a meeting of Bulgaria's National Security Advisory Council on September 14 2009 to discuss the country's implementation of measures recommended under the European Union's Co-operation and Verification Mechanism (CVM) and improvement of the management of EU funds.

These issues are priority among those that, on the same day as Purvanov's announcement, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov went to Brussels to discuss with top European Commission officials including EC President Jose Barroso.

The National Security Advisory Council, which by law is convened by the head of state, includes the Speaker of Parliament, Prime Minister, ministers of defence, interior, foreign affairs, finance, chief of the armed forces and the leaders of parliamentary groups in the National Assembly.

The President's office said that the council meeting would hear reports from Interior Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Simeon Dyankov and Justice Minister Margarita Popova.

The initiative by Purvanov is the second in two days where the head of state has addressed topical policy issues of crucial importance to Borissov's Government, which took office in July 2009. On September 8 2009, Purvanov released a lengthy article on his website criticising the Borissov administration's approach to energy policy.

Sadly, Jon, your scathing comment seems to be factually true. Unreconstructed commies are only really versed in Macchiavellian Realpolitik, it appears, and personal enrichment coupled with public infifference are the only rules of the game.
In a way, this is predictable: the former 'nomenklatura' is known for political wrangling, constitutional impediment, and poor governance. They are, however, masters of manipulation and it is hardly surprising that they should try all underhanded tactics to eliminate the competition. Borissov was at the very centre of the centrifugal forces when they were dominant in the former regime, ang ought to thus [...]

Read the full comment be familiar. One may hope that he lets due process take care of such unreformed commies as the President, and then let public opinion hang them.
The only thing those of us outside the corridors of power can do is show support for the new PM. As the dirty dealings of former commies are not unlike a terrorist campaign, seeking to attack seemingly soft targets, it is of import to note that the only plausible defence against it is to demonstrate national unity and unshakeable backing for the right man.
The solution against a virus is a quarantine.

Is it just a coincidence that a socialist president is doing eveything possible to hinder rather than help the new government?

Perhaps acting dishonourably is a requirement to be a socialist politician in Bulgaria.
