More than a ton of marijuana confiscated in Petrich

The region of Petrich has re-affirmed its reputation as the heartland of Bulgarian cannabis production as, once again, more than a ton was confiscated by the police, the Interior Ministry said in a media statement on September 9.

The police operation searched the area near the villages of Skrut and Klyuch and then houses in the two villages. The sweep yielded 1112 kg of drying cannabis plants.

Nine people have been arrested and are under investigation, although no charges were filed yet, Dnevnik daily said.

On August 18, another police sweep seized 1120 kg of marijuana in several villages in the Petrich and Sandanski regions in south-western Bulgaria.

It was not the first time Petrich police had uncovered such big quantities of cannabis. In 2008, about 1600 kg of partially-dried cannabis plants were found in the Petrich region village of Gabrene. During that particular raid, police found almost 2000 kg of cannabis.

In most cases, the owners of the fields used for growing cannabis were elderly people. When questioned by TV crews, they usually claimed to be unaware that what they were doing was illegal.
