PM Borissov heads for Brussels on his first official visit abroad

Prime Minister Boiko Borissov will make his first official visit abroad after taking office in July 2009 to the European Union headquarters in Brussels. During the two-day visit on September 9-10, Borissov will be accompanied by half of his Cabinet.

Borissov will hold a number of meetings aimed at restoring EU's trust in Bulgaria's ability to absorb and manage EU funds in a transparent way.

On September 7 2009, it was announced that the European Commission is to unblock about 140 million euro in funding for Bulgaria under the bloc’s Sapard pre-accession agricultural and rural development assistance programme.

One of the issues Borissov will discuss in Brussels is the package of 57 emergency measures to reform the judiciary, put together by Justice Ministry and presented a day earlier. The package involves changes in key legislation and scrutiny of the implementation of all recommendations made by the European Commission in its latest report published in July.

The proposed amendments are aimed at reforming the judicial system and cracking down on organised crime and corruption. One of Borissov's first meetings will be with Franz-Hermann Bruener, director-general of EU's anti-fraud office Olaf.

Borissov's busy agenda will include meetings with European People's Party president Wilfred Martens and Joseph Daul, floor leader of the European People's Party-European Democrats group in European Parliament.

Borissov is also scheduled to meet European Parliament president Jerzy Buzek, European Commissionaire for Environment Stavros Dimas and European Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso. A meeting with Meglena Kouneva, EC consumer protection commissionaire and Bulgaria's representative in the EC is not on the agenda

The delegation led by Borissov includes Interior Minister Tsvetan Tsvetanov, Foreign Minister Roumyana Zheleva, Regional Development Minister Rossen Plevneliev, Economy and Energy Minister Traicho Traikov, Environment Minister Nona Karadjova, Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naidenov and Justice Minister Margarita Popova.

Yuliana Nikolova, secretary of the Council on management of EU funds in Bulgaria and Bulgaria's ambassador to the EU Boiko Kotsev are also part of the delegation.
