Prime Minister to President: 'I understand when my actions cause envy'

After many years in high office, President Georgi Purvanov had finally discovered that the time for showing leadership skills and pragmatism had arrived, Prime Minister Boiko Borissov said on the Government's website. Borissov was referring to Purvanov's critical article on the Cabinet's energy policy published several hours earlier.

According to Borissov, the success of the new Government's pragmatic conduct of policy was supported by the European Commission's decision to unfreeze funds under its Sapard programme. Borissov also cited Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin's words.

"I don't see how there can be a continuity of something that does not exist," Borissov said, referring to Purvanov's call for policy continuity on energy projects between Borissov's Cabinet and the previous government of Sergei Stanishev. "Besides empty words and ground breaking ceremonies, there is nothing else," he said.

"The practice all over the world is for the opposition to give a 100-day grace period to the new Government," he said.

Bulgaria had not yet heard Purvanov's opinion on the actions of the former coalition government he helped form, an administration that featured failed policies and uncontrolled public spending, Borissov said.

The new Government's actions, its backing from the EC, the mutual trust it had established with Putin and its high approval reasons were a reason for "envy, which I understand," Borissov said.
