The eastern Black Sea nation of Georgia was hit by a powerful 6.2 Richter scale earthquake on September 8, world media has reported. The tremor occurred early on Tuesday morning, at 3.41am local time, according to a report by the US Geological Survey, which tracks earth tremors worldwide.

The USGS said on its website that the tremor's epicentre was about 155km northwest of the Georgian capital Tbilisi, at a depth of about 10km.

There was no immediate report of any fatalities, although according to different media reports, there has been structural damage recorded in various regions, the extent of which has yet to be tallied.

Other reports claimed there was an after shock with an epicentre estimated at about 70km north of Kutaisi, in the Oni region. Kutaisi itself is 236km west of Tbilisi.

According to reports from the capital city, the earthquake was felt strongly, but there are no reported damaged houses or injured people in Tbilisi.
