A strong earthquake, 6.0 on the Richter scale and 5.4 on the Richter scale, according to separate media reports, struck Albania and Macedonia at 11.49pm local time, 0.49am on September 7 Bulgarian time, Focus news agency has reported.

Seismologist reports have pinpointed the tremor's epicentre near the town of Bulqize, Albania, close to the Macedonian border.

The earthquake, which was followed by as many as 58 aftershocks, was felt in Tirana, as well as Macedonia, but it was not felt in Greece.

According to the latest reports from Albanian media, there are no reported casualties, although some villages along the border with Macedonia had told of scores of houses damaged or destroyed.

However, Albanian authorities have not officially disclosed any exact figures or further details assessing the scale of the damages from the earthquake.

Is it good enough?

Anonymous Shame on YOU , Kris!!!! Wed, Sep 09 2009 06:42 CET

Some people just don’t know for enough!!!! Hey, Kris, or you “FYROM nor Republic of Macedonia”, what happened to your humane feelings? Did you loose them, or you never had them? People are going through a catastrophe, misfortune, tragedy and you are playing a big politician!!!!! Save it and stay away. I have lived through an earthquake when I was 14. Now I am 60 but I still feel that fear of that horrifying thundering inside of the earth. So, not a word from YOU, just stay away and let the PEOPLE communicate.

Global seismic activity will increase exponentially because of the huge loss of the ice sheets and ice mass from glaciers. This loss results in the Tectonic Plates ascending and the kinetic energy created arises in weak points in the crust.

Very unpleasnt indeed..

P.S. No Correction needed. Rep. of Macedonia is not in Greece. Region of Macedonia is bigger of course - MK, BG, GR.

That is a strong earthquake. Without strict building codes, people will die and suffer a lot of damage to their homes. It is serious...not funny. The inffrstructure will be seriously hurt and people are undoubtedly injured.

Anonymous FYROM not Macedonia Tue, Sep 08 2009 00:39 CET

There needs to be a correction in this article. The earthquake did NOT hit Macedonia because Macedonia is in Greece, it needs to say "the earthquake hit FYROM and Albania"
Hope the people in Albania are OK.
