Macedonian transport minister resigns over Lake Ohrid tragedy

The Ilinden boat

Macedonian minister of transport Mile Yanakievski filed his resignation in the wake of the boat incident at Lake Ohrid which killed 15 Bulgarian tourists on September 5 2009. Bulgarian Focus news agency said.

"My resignation is a moral act," Yanakievski said. He said that it was too early to say precisely what caused the incident, but said that the boat had all its papers in order. Its licence was due to expire in May 2010. Licences are renewed annually, he said.

September 6 2009 was declared a day of mourning in Macedonia. September 7 2009 will be a day of national mourning in Bulgaria.

This tragic event will change water safety in Macedonia - unfortunately way too many people had to give their lives for it to happen. [...]
