Swiss police apprehend Bulgarian with 14kg of heroin

A Bulgarian anti-terrorist policeman guards a furnace at Kremikovtzi, the country's biggest steel mill, on the outskirts of Sofia November 22, 2002 while authorities destroy 956 kg of drugs, including 669 kg of heroin

Swiss police carried out what has been described as a "special operation" following a tip off from Bulgarian police, resulting in the arrest of a Bulgarian national carrying more than 14kg of heroin on September 3 in the Swiss town of Bellinzona, the press office of the Bulgarian Interior Ministry has said

The joint Bulgarian-Swiss operation was conducted employing elements from the Chief Directorate for Combating Organised and Heavy Crime and the Chief Criminal Police Directorate, reports say.

The Bulgarian, a 35-year-old native of Sofia, was arrested while processing a deal involving a 14kg package of  heroin. A total of five people were detained following the operation. Along with the Bulgarian national, authorities arrested three Serbs and a Swiss citizen, also involved in the scheme.

According to Focus news agency, the Sofia resident has a criminal record but attracted police attention while a parallel operation was investigating a suspected drug-smuggling channel from Turkey  to Switzerland via Bulgaria.

Subsequently, he was placed under surveillance and his whereabouts and activities were forwarded to the relevant Swiss authorities.
